Hollywood Remembers 'L.A. Confidential' Director Curtis Hanson

Academy Award winning filmmaker Curtis Hanson, whose credits include masterpieces like L.A. Confidential, hits like 8 Mile, and under-seen gems like Wonder Boys, passed away yesterday from natural causes in his Los Angeles home. He was 71 years old.

Hollywood was quick to respond to the passing of director Curtis Hanson, director of L.A. Confidential, Wonder Boys, The River Wild and many others.

"Curtis Hanson believed in me and our crazy idea to make a rap battle movie set in Detroit," Eminem said in a statement. "He basically made me into an actor for 8 Mile. I'm lucky I got to know him."

After 8 Mile, Hanson directed In Your Shoes, Lucky You and Too Big to Fail — HBO's dramatization of the 2008 financial crisis — but while filming the surf movie Chasing Mavericks, he was forced to drop out due to an undisclosed illness. Michael Apted finished the 2012 movie, which now stands as Hanson's last.

Hanson was a great, versatile movie professional who — as writer and director — helped create a handful of classics.

Paris Barclay, DGA president:

"As a filmmaker, Curtis often sent his characters into unexpected, dangerous situations that required quick thinking and skilled precision to emerge victorious. This was much like Curtis' own directing, where he thought on his feet and used his honed mastery of the craft to create worlds of suspense and emotion. As a DGA member, Curtis was a champion of protecting the director's vision, serving on the DGA's Creative Rights Committee. He was also a tireless advocate for film preservation, serving on the President's Committee on Film Preservation, and as a board member of The Film Foundation. We are proud to have recognized Curtis with a DGA Honor in 2003 for his prolific career as a director, producer and preservationist. He will be deeply missed."

Next Films for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt After Splitting

Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences.Very sad news to hear. Angelina and Brad made such a wonderful couple. Seems like no one in this day of age can't stay together like the older folks from back in the olden days did. Thats the problem in this new generation.

The couple, who famously starred together in 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith, reunited last year for By the Sea, which was a commercial and critical disappointment. However, both Jolie and Pitt have continued to work as actors and producers (and, for Jolie, as a director) throughout their relationship.

A primer on Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's upcoming projects

Angelina Jolie

The actress has wrapped work on the foreign language feature film First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, which Netflix will release. She directed and produced the film, which centers on Cambodian human rights activist Loung Ung, who recounts the horrors she suffered under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge. it is based on Ung's memoir of the same name. Jolie also is a producer on the upcoming animated film The Breadwinnerfrom animated powerhouse Gkids.

On the acting front, Jolie will reprise her titular role for the Maleficent sequel. Disney has not yet set a release date or hired a director for the follow-up to the 2014 hit, but Linda Woolverton is writing the script. Jolie was at one time in talks for Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express, but a deal did not get made.

Brad Pitt

The actor continues to be a busy producer through his Plan B productions. His upcoming producer credits include Moonlight, which was a breakout at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Lost City of Z starring Charlie Hunnam and the HBO Lewis and Clark TV miniseries.

Pitt will next be seen in the Robert Zemeckis film Allied, opposite Marion Cotillard, which is set to hit theaters on Nov. 23. He's also a producer on The Lost City of Z, starring Charlie Hunnam, which is expected to be released in the spring of 2017, and he's an executive producer on Moonlight, which is set to be released on Oct. 21.
